(hkfilmart, Jun 22, 2013) The long awaited sequel to martial arts hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will go into production in March 2014, with Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Yu Shulin and Donnie Yen taking a new role as Silent Wolf.
The announcement was made during the Cannes Film Festival by US-based Weinstein Company. The company’s co-founder Harvey Weinstein is producing along with David Thwaites who most recently served as executive producer on The Black Swan.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II – The Green Destiny will be based on the same series of books as the original, Wang Dulu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy. Weinstein also revealed that the company has plans to turn the five-part series into a franchise.
Hong Kong martial arts master Yuen Woo Ping is directing. He is one of the first from Hong Kong to enter Hollywood and worked with Weinstein on Iron Monkey, Kill Bill and more recently The Grandmaster. He was action choreographer of the original Crouching Tiger film.
The first film was directed by Ang Lee and starred Chow Yun Fat and Zhang Zhiyi in addition to Yeoh. Released in 2000, it became an international hit including in the US and won over 40 international awards including Hong Kong Film Awards, Golden Horse, BAFTA and Academy Awards, among others.
