James Cameron will open 3D technology JV in China
Cameron Pace Group has formed a joint venture in North China’s Tianjin municipality promote 3D filmmaking and equipment development in China.
Oscar-winning director James Cameron is to open a joint venture in China to provide 3D filming technology. The new company will gather Cameron Pace Group (CPG) and state-owned film distributor Tianjin North Film Group and Tianjin Hi-tech Holding Group.
CPG co-chairmen James Cameron and Vince Pace, Gong Jing, chairman of Tianjin Hitech Holding Group, and Wang Dafang, chairman of Tianjin North Film Group, signed the contract Tuesday July, 07 in Tianjin and announced the establishment of the joint venture.
Last April, Cameron already announced the installation of its Chinese headquarter in Tianjin.
CPG China Division, the new arm of Cameron Pace Group, will offer Chinese film makers 3D camera technology but will not be involved immediately in producing films, Cameron told Reuters.
“We’re not going to tell Chinese film makers how to make movies. We are going to help them make a transition to 3D production technology as cost effectively as possible, and in a way that doesn’t inhibit creativity,” he said.
Cameron said the deal was “huge”, though he would not reveal the amount of the investment or the venture’s equity split with its Tianjin partners.
The company will focus on 3D filmmaking, developing 3D technology and equipment and training 3D arts and technology professionals.
Initial projects to “build muscle” will focus on 3D films highlighting Chinese cities. He said the ambitions of the Chinese partners, as well as Chinese state television eager to try out live 3D broadcast technology, exceeded even his own.
“We think we’re on the verge of a kind of media revolution. And we certainly have the enabling technology, we have the methodology, we’ve honed our skills,” he said.
Cameron said “the success of his films “Avatar” and “Titanic” in China has demonstrated the Chinese audience’s love of 3D, and that is why they choose to share their 3D technology with China”.
