Guangzhou’s SMC and Disney will partner on TV Animation
Southern Media Corporation (SMC) recently signed a strategic memorandum with the Walt Disney Company to jointly develop children’s programming.
The new partners intend to produce content featuring Chinese cultural settings and stories to be introduced to the global market via Disney’s platforms. The two companies will also explore a possible animation training partnership.
SMC is a provincial government owned broadcasting group which operates 7 free to air terrestrial channels (under Guangdong TV names), one national Children’s Channel JiaJia and 8 digital pay tv channels.
Its channels cover 90% of homes in Guangdong Province and reach 800 million people nationwide and over 2 billion people worldwide.

Jiajia childrens channel
Jiajia was established in March 2006 with the approval from SARFT. Under the Guangdong Nanfang TV & Film Media Group, Jiajia is a pioneer in cable TV and digital TV in the Guangdong Province. Jiajia intends to form a comprehensive model which contains TV channel, website and strong connection with the industrial chain (especially the growing Guangdong animation base).
The channel broadcasts from 6:00 to 24:00 for 18 hours per day. The channel aims at audience of various age groups, from 4 to 55 years old. The channel has some self-produced programs, including “The Health Train”, “Kubi Weather Station”, and “Picture & World”.
SMC has already an international cooperation with Viacom group since 2010. The program “Real Live Real Music” is a co-production between GDTV and MTV, which is shown every Saturday night at 9pm on GDTV Satellite.
In 2011, according to Sarft, Guangzhou was the 5th Chinese city for its animation production with 30 series and 18 449 minutes (against 24 series and 13 794 minutes in 2010).
