Plans for national cable operator submitted to China’s State Council (Southern Metropolitan News)
On February 15, Zhang Haitao, deputy director of China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), said recently that plans for the formation of a consolidated national cable TV operator China Radio and Television Network Co., Ltd. have been submitted to the State Council for approval.
If the State Council agrees, the company would be formed this year. In this case, the cable networks around the country will be unified under a single national network, China Radio and Television Network, which would become a potential carrier for value-added telecommunications services, internet access, and data transmission services.
Zhang also pointed out that the priority task this year regarding “three-networks convergence” is to build up the national platform for China’s cable and digital TV network. The deputy chief added that the digital top-set box for TV set assigned for “three-networks convergence” trial cities must be “two-way”, and could “accommodate TV broadcast, internet, and telecom businesses”.
