Shanghai Media Group adapts “Shear Genius” for China

Shanghai Media Group (SMG) will debut a local version of US hairdressing talent format “Shear Genius” this weekend.

SMG has adapted the Reveille-devised format, which is carried by US network, Bravo. The Chinese version will air on Saturday on Shanghai New Entertainment Channel as well as Star Chinese Channel.

According to Xinhua, SMG decided to launch the new reality show after the success of China’s Got Talent, the Chinese version of Britain’s Got Talent with the copyright purchased by SMG”, said Jin Zhongbo, an official of the New Entertainment Company affiliated with SMG. “The Chinese version of Shear Genius will be the first reality television series focusing on hair styling in China”, Jin said.

News Corp-owned Shine International worked with Chinese rights broker IPCN to secure the deal with SMG. The show will be known locally as “Fa Dong Qi Ji”.

“This is yet another great example of the burgeoning format licensing business in China,” said IPCN chief Rebecca Yang, who set up the company with former ITV exec Mick Desmond.

“China is a key market for us, and this is a great step towards growing our footprint and further strengthening relationships in Asia Pacific,” added Cyrus Farrokh, director of international distribution at Shine International.

Shanghai’s Vidal Sassoon Academy has signed up as sponsor.

IPCN has been instrumental in getting formats such as The Cube, Sing It and Dating In the Dark away in the People’s Republic.

“Shear Genius” is Shine International first format deal in China. The format has previously been adapted for Brazilian audiences by GNT.
