Shanghai Jan-May 2011 Radio, Film, TV Revenue Up 19% YoY (Sarft)

According to statistics released by China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), Shanghai saw actual revenues (excluding government subsidies) from the radio, TV and film industry reach RMB 8.31 bln, up 18.7% YoY, for the first five months of 2011. Its major media company, Shanghai Media & Entertainment Group (SMEG), recorded revenues of RMB 7.01 bln for the same period, 84,35% og Shanghai global revenues.

For the January to May period of 2011, Shanghai’s TV and radio advertising revenue rose 45.3% YoY to RMB 2.79 bln, with Radio and Television Shanghai (RTS) accounting for RMB 2.64 bln, of which RMB 2.33 bln came from TV advertising, up 64.1% YoY. Radio advertising revenue rose 29.4% YoY to reach RMB 220 mln, while other advertising revenue rose 125% YoY to RMB 90 mln.

Revenues from cable TV networks rose 14.9% YoY to RMB 770 mln in the first five months of 2011. Revenue from cable TV network fees rose 33.3% YoY to RMB 320 mln, while revenue from premium cable DTV services rose 100% YoY to reach RMB 80 mln, and revenue from other networks fell 2.6% YoY to RMB 380 mln.

For the first five months of 2011, revenue from other businesses, such as TV shopping network Dongfang CJ, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Export & Import, and film distributor Shanghai United Circuit, reached RMB 4.75 bln, up RMB 340 mln compared to the same period last year, or 7.7% YoY.
