Colombia’s Caracol Television partners with CCTV

Colombia’s Caracol Televisión has entered into a cooperation agreement with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. The historical agreement was signed in Colombia’s capital city on Thursday by Carlos Alejandro Pérez Dávila, president of Caracol Televisión and Gao Zhengyue, China’s Ambassador to Colombia.

Gao Zhengyue, the People’s Republic of China Ambassador in Colombia, and Li Changhong, head of the culture department at the embassy, were received by the channel’s president, along with Rosa Emilia Fonseca, executive vice-president and Luis Calle, the channel’s vice-president and other top Caracol Televisión executives.

“Signing this cooperation agreement opens a new chapter in the fruitful relationship between our two nations,” Pérez said. Bilateral trade between China and Colombia increased from $10 million in 1980 to more than $5 billion in 2010. Today, China is the second-largest trading partner of Colombia and it has huge perspectives in the media communications field.. While our relationship with CCTV is just emerging, we want to grow it with dedication to turn it into a mutually beneficial partnership that is reliable and long lasting.”

Gao added, The two channels are important in their respective countries and wish to be valued partners in sharing our cultural values and information. We would like to be valid mediators in the exchange of our cultural and informative values in order to contribute with the well-being of our nations. We look forward to further strengthening ties with Colombia.” Pérez also added that this event has a very special meaning for the network because “this year is the 31 anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationships between our two countries and Julio Mario Santo Domingo, founder of our business group, had the honor to be Colombia’s ambassador before the People’s Republic of China at that time.”

Caracol is among a number of Latin American content companies looking to boost their business in China. Its major competitors Venevision International and Televisa Internacional have already partnered with state broadcasting giant CCTV.
