Chinese theaters : 96% market share for US films and 2,9 million tickets for Panda’s first week-end

According to local media reports on Thursday, Kung Fu Panda 2 collected 125 million yuan ($19.3 million) at China’s box office last weekend, setting new records for a Saturday opening and weekend ticket sales total (after selling 2.9 million tickets in just two days).

The DreamWorks Animation/Paramount film was distributed nationwide on 3 500 screens by the state-run China Film Group and its sister company Huaxia Film Distribution. According to Global Times, during the same week-end, the Chinese romantic comedy, A Beautiful Life, has only collected 7 million yuan ($1 million).

The first Kung Fu Panda, released in China in June 2008 during the Beijing Olympics, was the first animated film to gross more than 100 million yuan ($15 million) at the local box office.

US films secured 96% market share in China during the 22-29 May week 

From 22 to 29 may, Kung Fu Panda was still beaten by “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”. The other Hollywood even increased the tickets sold to almost 3,9 million against 3,2 million during the 16-22 May week. The film has collected 21,97 million $ in its 3 first days. 

According to Film Biz Asia, Hollywood films secured a 96% market share of last week’s Chinese box office. US films took more than RMB300 million ($46.3 million) over seven days.

During the same week, the Top 5 films sold 8,4 million tickets nationally, including 8,1 million (96,3%) for the 3 US Films (Pirates, Panda and Fast Five).

This trend could drive beijing Government to reduce the exposure of the Hollywood films in order to protect domestic production, as they did in 2010 with Avatar.
